Why Erosion is not a Bad Word - Sediment Sources for Rapidly Evolving Coastlines

Tidal marshes comprise some of the most bioproductive habitats on earth. They perform multiple ecosystem services, provide an important form of flood protection, and store significant quantities of carbon. Although rapid future sea level rise is likely impact these systems, there is still little consensus on the nature of these impacts and how they will vary in different settings.  Two examples of tidal wetland systems (one freshwater, and one estuarine) will provide for a comparison of sources of sediment that are available to each in order to keep pace with sea level rise.
