Long-core varve record: Methods
1.) Methods
A continuous record of the varved sediments was obtained by removing
slabs of sediment from the unfrozen cores. The slabs were dehydrated
with repeated applications of acetone followed by epoxy resin (Lamoureux, 1994). The
epoxy was cured and the slabs were thin-sectioned for the counting and
measuring the varves under a microscope. Well-defined marker beds
were visually identified and correlated among the thin sections.
Varve sequences between the marker beds were repeatedly counted and
measured. Cross-dating was performed between core sections to
identify and resolve identification errors.
