Distinctive sediment layers were used as marker beds for studying the long cores. The establishment of a marker bed stratigraphy permitted the cross dating of short sections of couplets to identify and minimize errors. Additionally, the marker bed stratigraphy served to confirm that sedimentation was consistent throughout the cores studied.
