Authentic research using sandboxes

What kind of research do scientists do with deformational sandboxes?

Using a claybox to understand the San Andreas fault

mariel The UMass Amherst research group uses clay to investigate the evolution of the San Andreasul fault and the defomration around restraining bends. They use wet clay, about the consistency of yogurt, instead of sand because when a fault is cut into clay, it reactivates easily. Faults cut into sand do not reactivate.
