02 July Update from the summit

After a final check with the UMASS Climate Lab that good data was being transmitted from the station and received at UMASS, the UMASS team began their descent Tuesday afternoon.

The following report from the drilling team was received through Ellen Mosley-Thompson of Ohio State University:

They were at 90 meters on the first hole and the drill was working well, but progress was slow due to the weather conditions. They were planning the first balloon launch on Friday, July 4th. A writer for Natural History Magazine was in base camp and a photographer should arrive in La Paz tomorrow morning.

Spirits seemed high, although the work was hard and the weather was not cooperating. There was mention of some problems with the porters, but that did not seem to have resulted in insurmountable problems. All in all things were going fairly well.
