Images and updates from 1997 expedition

      July 01

01 July Update from the summit

Communication problems have prevented the team from sending a current image. They also have not been able to read their email since last week. Doug Hardy provided the following report via satellite phone.

After the last update, weather conditions once again deteriorated. However, work has progressed on both the ice core drilling and the repair of the weather station. The weather improved enough today to permit the possibility of the first balloon launch.

The weather station today transmitted the first of new data, which was received in the Climate Lab at UMASS. A few minor adjustments are needed. After a check with the lab tomorrow, the UMASS team hopes to begin their descent.

The UMASS team has had to do an excessive amount of digging to complete their work. They are quite exhausted from the rigors of so much physical work at the extreme altitude.

Hopefully, when the team has completed their descent, another update with an image will be provided. Then, after a few days rest, it will be on to Nevado Illimani.
