Images and updates from 1997 expedition
During the 1997 field season, we took advantage of modern satellite communications to transfer e-mail, data and images from the summit of
Sajama and Illimani right to this WWW server at the University of Massachusetts. The key
component was an STN Atlas SP 2000P Global Personal Telephone, which performed flawlessly. This unit is distributed in the
U.S. by Commerial Satellite Systems (716-425-0760). We also used a DEC 535 notebook, running
Windows95, connected with a regular 9-pin serial cable to the 9600 baud modem port
of the satellite phone. Power to recharge the telephone and computer batteries was provided by a really durable
Solarex MSX-5 Lite photovoltaic module. The images are taken with an Olympus DL300 digital camera.
