New research sites on Ellesmere Island

Paleoclimatic Reconstruction
from
High Resolution Arctic Lake Sediments

Reconnaissance studies are underway of seven new sites, which have good potential for additional annually-laminated records. The transect will extend our geographical coverage of high resolution lake sediment studies south to southern Ellesmere Island, thereby establishing a network of annually resolved varved lake sedimentary records from ~83°N to ~76°N across the Canadian High Arctic. This will then form the northern section of a network extending from Labrador and southern Baffin Island (by INSTAAR personnel) through the central Arctic (M. Retelle, Bates College) northward. Such a network will fulfill one of the major goals of PALE, which is to develop an extensive spatial network of high resolution sedimentary records for the last 2,000 years.
