What will you need for the field trip?
Clothing: you need to look like Indiana Jones (or at least like Dr. Jim Evans shown at right)
-
- long pants (jeans can be heavy if the day is hot so consider bing jeans and another lighter pair if you have them)
- hat with a wide brim
- light backpack
- hiking boots (sturdy sneakers are ok)
- bandana <- many uses
- sunglasses
- sunscreen with at SPF30+
- some geologists wear long sleeves even in the summer in the desert in order to avoid burning
- light jacket/sweater for cool evenings
- local currency (just kidding! Utah is still part of the USA)
- two 1-liter water bottles (nalgene are good but the kind you buy with water at the grocery store are ok) If you don't like being thristy a 'camelback' is good. These are backpacks full of water with a straw that you can sip whenever you are thristy.
- Swimsuit (the hotel in Moab has a pool)
Equipment: you need to think like a geologist
- field notebook (MSSD is providing :-)
- hand lens (MSSd is proving :-)
- compass (MSSD is providing :-)
- colored pencils
- pencil sharpener
- mechanical pencils
- eraser
- protractor
- ruler
