Department of Geosciences

The Quaternary period encompasses the last 2 epochs of Earth History: the Pleistocene and the Holocene . It is generally assumed to have begun 1.8 million years ago or 2.4 million years ago (depending on definition), and includes many cycles of glacials and interglacials, the Holocene being the most recent interglacial.
