Snowflake troctolite and other experimental delights in melts of the Kiglapait Lower Zone
Left: Nuclei of plagioclase (blue) with captured olivine (yellow) in experiment at 1217 deg.C, 5kb (in graphite, 9.1hrs). Note streamers of mafic solute rejected from plagioclase and periodic nucleation of olivine. Note also some partial melt inclusions in olivine (BSE image). Experimental results appear to constitute the first determination of a liquid line of descent for a layered intrusion at pressure.
Right: Snowflake troctolite - large plagioclase-olivine snowflake with blades of plagioclase and included olivine.
