An update on John Feldman’s film
Magulis Documentary Update: Puffer's Pond, Spain, and More!
The Question (You know what the question is, don’t you?)
The Question (You know what the question is, don't you?)
I captured this insight from Emily Case at a picnic we held with a handful of Lynn Margulis’s students in mid-May. We spoke about Lynn as a teacher, scientist, and friend. We all met at Puffer’s Pond in Amherst where Lynn took her daily swims and explored marine life.
Spain and More
Since my last e-newsletter I’ve been to Spain to interview Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Ricardo Guerrero and Luis Rico. Federico Mayor Zaragoza told me how Lynn’s ideas about symbiosis inspire him as he works towards world peace. He was the head of UNESCO (1987-1999) and is now the director of the Foundation for the Culture of Peace. A microbiologist by training, he spoke of his commitment as a scientist to be involved in world politics. In my interviews with both Federico Mayor Zaragoza and Luis Rico, a cultural activist and director of Estudio Symbiotic, we discussed the vital importance of getting Lynn's ideas into the mainstream and into schools around the world. Ricardo Guerrero, Professor of Microbiology at the University of Barcelona, gave me delightful tours of Barcelona, which he called Lynn’s second home. For the interview, he and I spoke about Lynn and, of course, the microbial world.
When I returned to the US, I interviewed Scott Gilbert, Professor Emeritus at Swarthmore College about epigenetics and evolutionary developmental biology. Then I traveled to Boston University and interviewed Douglas Zook, Professor of Science Education and Global Ecology, about Lynn and symbiosis. Last week I went to Hadley and interviewed Dorion Sagan about his parents, Lynn Margulis and Carl Sagan, and his collaborations co-authoring many wonderful books with Lynn Margulis.
India
At the end of June, my wife Sheila Silver, our son Victor, and I will be traveling to India where we will be living for six months while Sheila studies Hindustani music, Victor goes to school, and I work on writing the first draft script of this documentary.
While I’m in India, I would love to talk to scientists in the Mumbai and Pune region whose work is in accord with Lynn's ideas. If you know of anyone, please let me know.
I look forward to continuing work on this inspiring project and will keep you updated from India.
