ROCK OF THE WEEK DESCRIPTIONS

SKETCH
All rock descriptions need a sketch:

- make a labeled sketch with annotations
- make the sketch with a pencil and then add color
- don't forget to include a scale bar

DESCRIPTION

1)    General description – color (fresh & weathered), texture (coarse grained, fine grained, variety of sizes, erosive features, foliated, lineated).

2)    Mineral

3)    Rock name commonly includes the minerals, lithology (slate, pelite, quartzite, marble, calc-silicate, volcanic, etc.) and a textural term. ---------- e.g., garnet chlorite biotite schist

4)    Structural observations cleavage, folded, foliated, lineated, fractured, joints, primary structures, shear bands. Describe it even if you don't know the proper name for it.color (fresh & weathered), texture (coarse grained, fine grained, variety of sizes, erosive features, foliated, lineated).

5)    Analysis/Interpretation
i. Kinematic analysis
ii. Dynamic analysis

6)    Conclusions
Talk about the significance of the structural observations and then discuss the geologic history of the specimen.
