EARTHQUAKE NEWS

Java, Indonesia: Wednesday, September 2nd: A large magnitude earthquake (M = 7.0) of the SW coast of Java in Indonesia at a depth of about 50 km (31 miles) caused severe damage in nearby towns and rattled the capital city of Jakarta. Todate about 32 people are reported dead and hundreds injured. No tsunami was associated with this submarine quake. The last major earthquake in Indonesia occurred at Christmas, 2006, resulting in a tsunami that swept across the Indian ocean, killing about 230,000 people in several countries as well as Indonesia.

Samoan Islands: Tuesday, September 29th: A very large ahallow earthquake (M = 8.0) off the Samoan islands tiggered a tsunami (30 ft waves) which resulted in many deaths and did extensive damage to low lying areas of the nearby Samoan Islands and Tonga. The tsunami was not Pacific wide.

Sumatra, Indonesia, Wednesday, September 30th: A large magnitude earthquake (M = 7.6) at a depth of around 80 km caused severe damage and deaths in Padang and surrounding areas. The death toll is currently around 500 with thousands missing or buried. To make matters worse, anothe large earthquake (M = 6.7) occurred again today (Thursday, Oct. 1) about 270 km from yesterdays event.

Vanuatu and Santa Cruz Island, October 7 and 8th: Multiple unusually large earthquakes (M ~ 7+) were recorded near these islands where the Australian plate is subducted beneath the Pacific plate. No damage has been reported and the earthquakes did not produce tsunamis.

 

VOLCANO NEWS

San Cristobel volcano, Nicaragua: Monday, September 7th, a series of explosive blasts at San Cristobel, volcano scattered ash on nearby towns, but no reported damage or injuries. A volcano warning is in effect.

Mayon Volcano, Philippines erupted Wednesday, November 11th. 700 families were evacuated and the alert level is still high.
