1996 Trip report
Installation of the weather station occurred on 1 October 1996. We ascended the mountain as a group of 19 people representing five different countries:
- three of us from the University of Massachusetts (D. Hardy, C. Braun, M.Vuille)
- five scientists from ORSTOM
- a guide from Colibri Agency (Carlos Escobar)
- ten porters to help transport the material
Our route up the mountain followed the north ridge, as suggested by Park personnel in Sajama village. We slept 3 nights at the High Camp, and one night on the summit. The night on the summit was extremely windy and cold. But, much to our surprise, the winds settled down around 06:00 the next morning and we had perfect weather conditions for the installation. The descent back to Sajama village (and the Hot Springs !) took another day.
After some rest days in La Paz we attempted to climb Huayna Potosi (6088 m). Our ascend was however stopped ~ 150 m below the summit by a fierce hail and snow storm.
