Image acquisition

Example of CCD picture

Images are acquired on sediment cores. Picture acquisition by Dr. M. Schaaf.

Nogaret (South of France), annually laminated sediments from 829 cm to 832 cm depth. Picture resolution: 12 pixels/mm.

Example of Photo CD™ Pictures

Picture from petrographic microscope (crossed-polarised light).

Lake Baikal, northern basin, Station 322, 108 cm depth: silty sediment from a Bouma D-division. Scale bar: 400 µ.

Each Photo CD™ Picture is composed of 3 layers (Red, Green, Blue)

Lake Baikal, same picture. Scale bar: 400 µ.

Each Photo CD™ picture is digitised using 5 different resolution from 192 x 120 pixels till 3072 x 2046 pixels.

Example of SEM picture
(Backscattered electron mode)

Lake Baikal, northern basin, Station 322, 103 cm depth. Scale bar: 200 µ. Picture in backscattered electron (BSE) mode.

In BSE images, object brightness is proportional to the mean atomic weight of the volume interacting with the incident electron beam. The epoxy resin used for impregnation of thin sections have a low atomic weight and therefore appears darker than the detrital objects.
